No duppy, it was a gunman! - Hughes quicker than robber's bullet at UWI
Racers Track Club sprinter Zharnel Hughes was held up at gunpoint in an attempted robbery at the University of the West Indies' Usain Bolt track at Mona ahead of a practice session yesterday evening.
Bolt frequents the track and was at the venue last week. Hughes, who represents Great Britain, said he was putting on his sneakers when the armed robber approached him.
"I was putting on my sneakers at my [car] trunk and this guy just came up, pointing a gun in my face. He asked me for my phone, I ran off and the guy opened fire," Hughes said.
Hughes said he reported the matter to the police. When STAR Sports contacted the police post, they said that they were aware of the shooting but there was no formal report.
Admittedly traumatised, Hughes went on to finish his training session.
"It's the first time this has ever happened to me. I am a bit traumatised but I just finished my training session," he said.
Attempts to contact Keith 'Trinity' Gardner, directory of security at the university, proved futile.
