American legend Clint Dempsey has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing to an end a 14-year career with the US national team.

The 35-year-old, who is affectionately called 'Deuce', will end his career as the joint-top goalscorer for the US national men's team and has also scored more goals than any other American in the English Premier League.

"After a lot of thought, my family and I have decided that this is the right time for me to step away from the game," Dempsey said. "I'd like to thank all of the teammates, coaches and support staff that I've worked with throughout my career. It has always been my dream to make it as a pro. I'm grateful to have been on this ride. I would like to thank all of the fans who have supported me throughout my career ... . Y'all have always made me feel at home, and it is something that I will always remember."

Dempsey was drafted eighth overall by Major League Soccer's New England Revolution in 2004 and after three seasons, he made the jump to Fulham, where he scored 60 goals in all competitions for the Cottagers, including 23 in his sixth season in London before moving across town to Tottenham Hotspur.

Dempsey then returned to the States with the Seattle Sounders, winning his first and only MLS Cup with the club in 2016.

He made 141 appearances for the US, representing the country at three World Cup tournaments.
