Child hospitalised after mom commits suicide
A three-year-old child is currently hospitalised after allegedly ingesting pesticide at his home in Orange Field, St Mary, on the weekend.
The police are seeking to establish if the child was fed the substance by his mother, who died after apparently drinking the pesticide.
The deceased woman has since been identified as 29-year-old Racquel Sommerville.
Reports from the police are that Sommerville was suffering from depression.
The child, whose condition up to press time was listed as stable, was reportedly rescued from the home after his father called a neighbour to visit the dwelling.
Orville Grant, a resident of the community, said, “I was on mi farm and my friend who work in Stony Hill say I must go look round a him yard because him just talk to him woman and ting. Mi go round deh and never see her. I walk round the house and look through di window. Mi see her lay down and her foot a kick. Mi climb up and go in and pull her to the door and a bawl help cause a me one.”
THE STAR understands that another resident had earlier visited Sommerville, who locked herself in the house after handing over the child.
Grant told our news team: “When dem go there, dem tek the son and she run back in the house and say she can’t take problem.”
Sommerville, who was found unresponsive, was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy is to be performed.
Efforts to speak with head of the St Mary Police Division, Superintendent Bobbette Morgan, proved futile.
