In an effort to assist the vulnerable during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, players from Red Stripe Premier League leaders Waterhouse FC recently handed out care packages to members of the surrounding communities. The packages were provided by team sponsors Tank-Weld Metals Limited.

The players, led by head coach Marcel Gayle, gave away more than 1,000 care packages over a three-day period last week to elderly persons in the Drewsland and surrounding communities.

Gayle told STAR Sports that he and the players were very grateful to Tank-Weld for the assistance to needy persons in these communities.

"We are very grateful to Tank-Weld for this initiative because a lot of people are struggling due to this pandemic, and so we are happy to be out there to lend our support to them," said Gayle.

"These are the same people that support us, and so we are just very excited to give back to these communities and to show our appreciation to them," he said.

COMMITTED TO SERVICE

In the meantime, Bruce Bicknell, managing director of Tank-Weld Metals and chairman of the Waterhouse FC, said his company was committed to assisting the needy in these communities.

"With the shutting down of local bars and the layoffs, and the reduction of remittances, this means that there is less money in the communities, and so the elderly will be even more vulnerable than usual at this time," said Bicknell.

"Many of them are not pensioners and are not on the PATH (Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education) programme, and so it is against this background why we felt it is necessary to help our neighbouring communities, focusing on the elderly in particular," he said.

"We were able to get out to a wide range of people in Waterhouse, Penwood Road, Balcombe Drive, Tower Hill, Majesty Gardens and other surrounding communities," Bicknell said.

He added that this pandemic is unprecedented in our lives, therefore, everyone must adhere to the Government's warnings and observe social distancing at all times.
