Man on murder charge also accused of scamming

A Hanover car parts manager who is facing murder charges in Jamaica and is wanted in the US for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft will have an extradition hearing on August 12.

This was revealed by Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jeremy Taylor yesterday in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

"We have made the final disclosure, Your Honour, from the personnel at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a hearing date can be set," Taylor told parish judge Venise Blackstock-Murray.

It is alleged that the accused, Alrick Grant, scammed a number of US citizens out of hundreds of thousands of dollars after convincing them that they had won the lottery and needed to send cash to receive their prizes. The decision to set a hearing date was delayed as Grant is facing a murder charge in the St Mary Home Circuit Court.

When the extradition request was first brought before the courts earlier this year, an adjournment was requested so that discussions could be had about the murder charge. Grant, 33, is charged with the July 20, 2018, murder of Damaine Gordon in Bailey's Vale. It was reported that Gordon was on a roadway in the community when a car with gunmen aboard drove up. They opened gunfire and shot and killed Gordon before speeding away.

Police later found the car that was reportedly used in the attack abandoned in the community. The vehicle was traced to Grant who was subsequently charged. In respect to that matter, he is to return to the St Mary Home Circuit Court on July 12. He is represented by Peter Champagnie, QC.
